Guiding Principles for Youth Participation

August 15, 2024

YPAS is delighted to Announce!

This exciting piece of work collaborated with Youth Access and was crafted by YPAS’s peer researchers and young people nationwide. The principles offer a powerful framework for channeling young people’s energy into impactful action.

YPAS Peer Researcher (Dean Leake, 21)

Young people can tell if you’re trying to be something that you’re not. We must bring that sense of authenticity and being ourselves because it encourages them to believe that whoever they are, whatever their personality or whatever, they can feel comfortable to do so too.”

Key Principles:

The ideas and values that should shape a culture of genuine youth leadership are:

  • Youth-led: Genuinely let young people lead, supporting us with the tools we need to do that.
  • Ambitious: Be ambitious, open, and ready to change things up – you’ll probably end up with something better than you could ever have thought of without us.
  • Authentic: Create a culture of honesty, transparency, and genuineness to help build trust, avoid tokenism, and show through your actions that we can all be our full selves!
  • Inclusive: Be intentional and proactive in creating spaces that feel welcoming, non-judgmental, safe, collaborative, and genuinely youth-led.

Monique Collier, CEO commented.

I am incredibly proud of the contributions made by our peer researchers. Their dedication and passion have been instrumental in shaping these Guiding Principles, which stand as a testament to the power of youth-led social action. This publication marks a pivotal moment in our mission to promote genuine, inclusive, and impactful youth leadership. Together, we are not just amplifying young voices – we are ensuring they lead the way in creating meaningful change.”
