On Saturday 18th May GYRO and THE Action Youth hosted Being Proud Awards and Art Activist 2019. It was a great success with over 135 people attending.
Art Activist is a creative project that promotes Artivism – using art and performance as a means of raising awareness of a particular issue, and as a vehicle to evoke change.
This can mean:
Visual art (painting, sculpture, drawing, photographs, film)
Creative writing (including poetry, fiction and non-fiction)
Performance (e.g. acting, singing, dancing, spoken word)
The winner of the 2019 #ArtActivist was GLOW Halton, which means next year’s event will be hosted once again in the Liverpool City Region!
Paul Rooney, LGBTQ+ Information Advice and Guidance Worker at YPAS said:
GYRO and THE Action Youth were extremely proud to host Art Activist this year with the support of The Proud Trust and Liverpool John Moore’s University. IM Marsh campus was a perfect setting for the event that saw the culmination of months of hard work and creativity from LGBTQ+ young people from across the North West. The numbers in attendance and the quality of the creative projects that youth groups presented on the day far exceeded our expectations and showcased, not only the talents of LGBTQ+ young people, but also the importance of activism for LGBTQ+ young people as a means to get their voices heard and to come together and support each other as a community (and to have loads of fun whilst doing it!
