YPAS retain Navajo Merseyside Charter Mark

We have successfully passed a reassessment to retain the Navajo Merseyside Charter Mark.

The Navajo Merseyside & Cheshire LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex) Charter Mark is an equality mark sponsored by In-Trust Merseyside & Sefton Embrace and supported by the LGBTI Community networks across Merseyside – a signifier of good practice, commitment and knowledge of the specific needs, issues and barriers facing lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people in Merseyside.

YPAS’s mission is to improve the mental health and emotional well-being needs of children, young people and families in a non-stigmatized environment. As part of our many services and support we offer throughout Liverpool, we have specific support groups and projects that meet the criteria of the Navajo Charter Mark.

YPAS is very proud of its LGBT+ provisions. “GYRO” are the longest running LGBT+ youth groups in the UK and run three age appropriate drop in sessions weekly at YPAS Bolton Street supporting anyone aged 12-25 who identifies as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans*, other sexualities and gender identities, or are questioning their sexuality or gender identity. YPAS also run “THE (Trans Health Education) Action Youth” who specifically focus on gender identity for those aged 12-18 years old. These groups are free to attend and run each week. We also provided 1-1 support for young LGBT+ people who need more individually tailored support or are unable to attend the groups.

For more information about these groups please contact us on 0151 707 1025 or email [email protected]

Having the Navajo accreditation with Kite Mark, means that YPAS is in line with statutory requirements and promotes best practice in engaging with the LGBT community.

“Having the NAVAJO award changed the equality monitoring at YPAS, it enabled us to demonstrate the diversity of young people we support and identify gaps in provision. Young people have expressed it was really positive being asked the questions and for many of them the first time. The Navajo team is inspirational and YPAS would recommend all services to gain this accreditation. It is not easy but very worthwhile”

Valerie O’Donnell Senior Operational Manager.
